Edvard Grieg: Pinsesalme (1874)

From the first version of the incidental music to Peer Gynt, 1874. This piece was not one of those chosen by Grieg to be released as part of his orchestral suites, yet it has great charm. It is an arrangement of the hymn for Whitsuntide or Pentecost 'Oh Blessed Morning', the words are by Henrik Ibsen. It is written in the style of a Bach chorale, displaying the mannerisms with which Bach was performed by the late 1800s. Sung in Norwegian.

Velsignede Morgen,
da Gudsrigets Tunger traf
Jorden som flammende stål.
Fra Jorden mod Borgen
nu Arvingen sjunger
på Gudsrigets Tungemål.

Oh blessed morning
When God's heav’nly tongues
Struck the earth like flaming steel!
From the earth towards the citadel
Now the inheritor sings
In the heavenly tongue.
